Description
Making yogurt at home is easy with a slow cooker. This simple guide will help you create creamy, delicious yogurt using just a few ingredients.
Ingredients
1/2 gallon whole milk
1/2 cup plain yogurt with live active cultures
1/4 cup powdered milk (optional for creaminess)
Instructions
Heat the Milk: Pour the whole milk into the slow cooker. Cover and cook on low for 2 to 3 hours until the milk reaches about 180°F (82°C).
Cool the Milk: Turn off the slow cooker and let the milk cool down to around 110°F (43°C) for about 1 hour.
Add Yogurt Starter: In a bowl, mix the plain yogurt with a small amount of the warm milk. Stir until smooth, then add this mixture back into the slow cooker, along with the optional powdered milk.
Incubate the Yogurt: Cover the slow cooker with a towel to retain heat. Leave it on the warm setting for 6 to 12 hours, depending on how tangy you like your yogurt.
Chill the Yogurt: After the incubation period, transfer the yogurt to clean jars and refrigerate for at least 4 hours before serving.
Notes
For a thicker yogurt, you can strain it through cheesecloth after chilling. Homemade yogurt can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
