Description
This authentic German goulash, or Rindergulasch, is a hearty and flavorful beef stew, perfect for a comforting meal. Slow-cooked with tender beef, onions, and a rich blend of spices, it’s a traditional dish that warms the soul.
Ingredients
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
2 pounds beef chuck, cut into 1-inch cubes
2 large onions, chopped
4 cloves garlic, minced
2 tablespoons tomato paste
1 tablespoon sweet paprika
1 teaspoon caraway seeds
1 teaspoon dried thyme
4 cups beef broth
2 bay leaves
Salt and pepper to taste
1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
Chopped fresh parsley for garnish
Instructions
Brown the Beef: In a large pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Add the beef cubes in batches, browning them on all sides. Remove the beef and set aside.
Sauté Onions and Garlic: In the same pot, add the chopped onions and sauté until they are soft and translucent, about 5-7 minutes. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another minute.
Add Tomato Paste and Spices: Stir in the tomato paste, paprika, caraway seeds, and thyme, cooking for 2 minutes to enhance the flavors.
Combine Ingredients: Return the browned beef to the pot and pour in the beef broth. Add bay leaves and season with salt and pepper. Bring to a boil.
Simmer: Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let it simmer for 1.5 to 2 hours, or until the beef is tender.
Finish the Dish: Once the beef is tender, stir in the red wine vinegar. Adjust seasoning if necessary.
Serve: Garnish with chopped fresh parsley and serve hot with crusty bread or over egg noodles.
